A major step forward has been made in improving transport around Aylesbury with the opening of the first section of the South-East Aylesbury Link Road (SEALR) and the Stoke Mandeville Relief Road (SMRR).
Buckinghamshire Council is leading delivery of the overall SEALR project, securing £147.9 million in funding and working closely with partners including Rob Butler who continually lobbied when the MP for Aylesbury for funding for this project, Department for Transport, Homes England, developers, and landowners.
The new link forms part of Aylesbury’s future orbital road network, easing congestion and creating better connections across the town. The SEALR will eventually include 1.1 miles of new dual carriageway and three new roundabouts, linking with the SMRR at the newly built Pearce Roundabout. The next stage — a new bridge over the London railway line — is already under construction.
Cllr Steven Broadbent, Leader of Buckinghamshire Council, said:
“This is an exciting day for Buckinghamshire and marks a key stage in our ambition to enhance the transport infrastructure in and around Aylesbury. This is one of the biggest road improvements the council has made in a generation and demonstrates its commitment to improving the highways network, creating better traffic flow, and supporting future development.”
Cllr Broadbent thanked all those involved in the complex scheme, noting that while the council has invested significantly, most of the funding has been secured externally, including contributions from the Housing Infrastructure Fund and developer Section 106 agreements.
When fully complete, the South-East Aylesbury Link Road will form a vital part of the new Aylesbury Orbital Link Road, providing an alternative route around the town, reducing congestion in the centre, and adding new walking and cycling paths.
