Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher passes away

Aylesbury MP David Lidington has issued the following statement regarding the passing away of Margaret Thatcher.

Margaret Thatcher was an inspiring leader. Everything she did as Prime Minister sprang from her unshakeable belief in Britain and her passionate drive to improve the security and prosperity of the British people.

The simple fact of becoming Britain’s first woman Prime Minister would justify her place in history. I am sure that in years to come, historians will debate, as with every political leader, the balance of success and misjudgement. For my part, I believe that her political courage, energy and unflagging determination rescued our country from what seemed like inexorable decline.

Margaret Thatcher also loved Chequers. She treasured her weekends in the Buckinghamshire countryside. Although the paperwork and the phone calls still followed her, Chequers provided at least some respite from the pressures of Number 10 and the House of Commons.

Aylesbury Constituency Conservative Association Chairman Cllr Steve Bowles said, "Margaret Thatcher was a truly inspirational leader of the country as well as the Conservative Party. She transformed modern politics and touched so many people’s lives. She will always divide opinion but we believe today is a very sad day in British politics. Our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time."
